Skating, community & good vibes: Meet Mat Chigwidden of Chiggy’s Skateboarding
For Mat Chigwidden, skateboarding is more than just a sport. It’s a way to build self-confidence, resilience and connection. As the founder of Chiggy’s Skateboarding, Mat has spent over a decade sharing his passion for skating with people of all ages, creating a welcoming space where beginners and experienced skaters alike can learn new skills, push their limits, and, most importantly, have fun.
“The best part of coaching is seeing the stoked, happy faces of someone landing a trick they never thought they could,” Mat says. “Watching it happen never gets old — it feels just as rewarding for me as landing my own trick.”
From regular skate schools and private coaching to exciting holiday workshops and community events, Chiggy’s Skateboarding has become a favourite in Aura. Whether it’s teaching kids their very first kickflip or encouraging adults to rediscover the joys of childhood, Mat and his team bring high energy and positive vibes to every session.
A sport for everyone
What makes skateboarding such a great activity? According to Mat, it’s about so much more than just learning tricks. It’s about personal growth, persistence, and being part of a supportive community.
“Skateboarding is incredibly diverse and inclusive — it’s for everyone, no matter your age or ability,” Mat explains. “It teaches valuable life skills like perseverance, problem solving and self-confidence, but it also creates friendships and a real sense of belonging. The skate community is incredibly supportive, and that’s something really special.”
The impact of Chiggy’s Skateboarding in Aura has been huge, with workshops and holiday programs booking out fast. Aura Youth Fest is a big highlight on the community calendar, with Chiggy’s bringing skaters and aspiring skaters together to show off their skills, learn from experienced coaches, and have a blast.
Charlotte Buckley, Aura’s Community Development Manager, says Mat and the rest of the Chiggy’s team create an encouraging learning environment where kids can grow, make friends and feel supported.
“Their workshops and holiday programs are always such a hit,” Charlotte says. “It’s incredible to see how skateboarding brings people together, boosts confidence, and creates such positive energy in the community.”
What’s next for Chiggy’s at Aura?
With school holiday workshops locked in for the next 12 months and Youth Fest just around the corner, the future is looking bright for Chiggy’s Skateboarding.
“We’re so stoked to keep growing with this amazing community,” Mat says. “There’s so much in the pipeline, and we can’t wait to share it with everyone.”
Whether you’re a beginner looking to try something new or an experienced skater keen to refine your skills, Chiggy’s Skateboarding has something for everyone. Keep an eye out for their school holiday workshops and don’t miss them at Aura Youth Fest on 11 April from 2pm at Baringa Skate Park!
