The Herd Biltong: A taste of South Africa in Aura
Founded in 2016 by Jared Abrahamse and his wife, Olivia Barbato, The Herd Biltong handcrafts preservative-free, small-batch biltong using 100% premium Aussie beef and quality ingredients. From their factory and retail store in Baringa, this family-run business has become a go-to for Aura locals seeking a healthy, protein-packed snack.
For Jared, biltong is more than just a tasty treat; it’s an important part of his South African heritage.
“Biltong is a very traditional South African snack,” Jared shares. “It’s the equivalent of a meat pie or sausage roll here in Australia. It’s what you’d take to the cricket or the footy.”
Jared’s entrepreneurial journey began with a real lightbulb moment.
“When we were still living in Sydney, I had biltong leftover and popped it on Facebook Marketplace – it sold out in 10 minutes and my phone didn’t stop ringing! That’s when I realised there was a real demand for high-quality biltong.”
As The Herd Biltong continued to gain popularity, Jared and Olivia knew it was time to scale their operations and find a proper commercial facility. The decision to move to the Sunshine Coast and settle in Aura was an easy one.
“Moving to Aura was a no-brainer,” Jared explains. “When we looked at Stockland’s masterplan, we saw incredible growth potential for the business. We knew that the population was going to increase dramatically, and the community here is just so welcoming.”

“Local entrepreneurs like Jared and Olivia not only offer great products, they help contribute to that sense of community and belonging that make Aura such a special place to live.”
That feeling of community is something that Jared and his family have experienced firsthand.
“From the start, the support from locals has been amazing — they know our whole story, and we love getting to know theirs,” Jared says.
