Coffee Ground Recycling at Stockland Wendouree

26 July 2022

Stockland Wendouree have partnered with GroundUp Coffee Recyclers and Waste Options to bring an eco-friendly solution to recycling coffee grounds with our food retailers.

The first dedicated service of its kind in Ballarat, GroundUp Coffee Recyclers offers the hospitality industry a simple and sustainable solution for their coffee grounds and kitchen scraps. Saving the planet one cup of coffee at a time.

Their service offers an effective, sustainable solution for cafes and restaurants by delivering valuable resources to small scale and regenerative farmers in the local region in order to close the loop. From land, to table and back again.

GroundUp Coffee Recyclers’ mission is to regenerate at least 250 tonnes of organic food waste within its first year resulting in a drop of local Co2 emissions of 450,000kgs. Their plan is to make a positive impact for the community, by the community.

Since launching in mid-2021, the team have diverted over 60,000kgs of used coffee grounds and kitchen scraps from landfill through their Resource Partners. These recycled resources have been composted and used by their resource partners.

So, how does it work?

Cafes and restaurants sign up with the GroundUp team to be a resource partner. They come every week and collect coffee grounds and kitchen scraps from participating retailers. They then deliver the recycled items to regenerative and small-scale farmers to turn the resources into nourishing compost to grow delicious food for the Ballarat region and beyond.

The GroundUp team are extremely conscious of their sustainability efforts and strive to be the leaders in coffee ground and kitchen scraps recycling for the Ballarat region. From the very beginning they wanted to ensure their ongoing use of the van used to collect the coffee grounds was done in a carbon-neutral manner. The team partnered and work closely alongside 15 Trees to ensure they’re reducing their impact.

When purchasing a takeaway coffee at Stockland Wendouree, close the gap even further and place your single-use coffee cup and lid in the Coffee Recycling Station to ensure all elements of your coffee are recycled.
