It’s back to school and back on the basketball court for many children participating in the Suncoast Spinners Wheelchair Basketball Kids Club program.

With the help of a Stockland community grant, Suncoast Spinners has rolled out a weekly wheelchair basketball program for children aged 4 – 16 years at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) indoor sports stadium.

As part of the program, children can participate in a one-hour wheelchair basketball session, where parents and siblings are also encouraged to join in.

“We are passionate about ensuring children with a disability on the Sunshine Coast have access to an inclusive team sport,” says Suncoast Spinners President and Paralympian, Bridie Kean.

“The program attendees are predominantly children with a physical disability like Spina Bifida or Cerebral Palsy. Many of these kids have experienced being left on the sideline at school sports events and activities due to their impairment. The Suncoast Spinners Kids Club gives access to a popular sport that is suited to their physical needs, it’s fun and importantly includes their families.”

Funding from the $1000 Stockland grant has been used for purchasing age-appropriate equipment such as basketballs and uniforms as well as to paying court hire.

“The Stockland grant has allowed us to deliver this program to members for free, which encourages maximum participation and removes the financial burden for many families who are already struggling financially with ongoing medical costs. Also, many of the children have an allergic reaction to latex so we need to buy leather basketballs which cost $140 each,” Bridie added.

The Kids Club runs on a Wednesday afternoon during the school term at the USC stadium from 5pm – 6pm for kids, parents and siblings.
