1. Wash the watermelon thoroughly and cut the base off about 2/3 of the way down. Be sure to leave the stem at the top.
2. Take a whiteboard marker and draw a wedge onto the side of the watermelon (around the stem) that’s roughly ¼ of the fruit. This will act as the mouth.
3. Using a large sharp knife, cut out the wedge just inside the marker line, leaving an approximately 1.5cm gap between the line and where you cut. Remove the cut slice of watermelon and set aside.
4. Then cut and scoop out the remaining fruit until the entire watermelon is empty, leaving it to the side.
5. Using a smaller sharp knife, trace the whiteboard marker line and slice into the green rind until you reach the white flesh of the fruit. Be careful to go no further.
6. Then use the knife to peel back the green rind around the edge of the mouth, to reveal the white rind.
7. Using a paring knife, cut the serrated teeth from the white rind until you have a complete set of shark teeth.
8. From the slice you removed earlier, take the rind off and cut it in half to create a fin. Secure onto the body using two toothpicks.
9. Take two purple grapes, pierce them with a toothpick and poke into either side of the watermelon to create the eyes.
10. Finish by taking the remaining watermelon, cutting it into chunks and slicing up any fruit salad you’d like to place in the mouth.
Voila! A scarily delicious centrepiece to your shark-themed birthday party.
