How to make a terrarium

As the school holidays approach, you may find yourself on the hunt for engaging and educational activities to keep your little ones entertained. At Stockland, we're excited to share a fun and creative project that's perfect for the whole family creating your very own terrarium!

A terrarium is a miniature garden in a container – aka a self-sustaining ecosystem. Not only do terrariums make for a great decorative piece for your home, but they also offer an opportunity for kids to learn more about science and the importance of nature

By creating a terrarium, children gain hands-on experience with the water cycle, photosynthesis, and the interconnectedness of living things. It's an interactive and immersive way to develop their understanding of the natural world, while also encouraging creativity

Below, we'll take you through the simple process of creating a terrarium. With just a few basic materials and some easy-to-follow steps, you and your family can create your very own miniature garden oasis.

What you’ll need:

  • Assorted pebbles
  • Glass jar or container
  • Potting soil
  • Spray bottle with water
  • Cacti and succulents (for open terrariums)
  • Moss and air plants (for enclosed, humid terrariums)
  • Decorative elements (optional)

Step-by-step guide

Step 1: Choose your container

Select a glass container that showcases your terrarium's layers. A rounded glass vase from Kmart works perfectly!

Step 2: Create the base layer

Use a small spade or spoon to add sand or soil. For smaller openings, use a funnel for accurate pouring.

Step 3: Add the remaining layers

Create layers with various pebbles and stones. Ensure the top layer is at least 3cm of potting mix for your plants to thrive.

Step 4: Plant your selection

Choose plants that fit your terrarium's environment. Opt for succulents and cacti for open terraria or mosses and air plants for enclosed, humid terraria.

Step 5: Decorate and enjoy!

Add stickers, crystals, or figurines to complete your terrarium

Congratulations! You now have your very own terrarium. Remember to keep a spray bottle nearby for watering. Check the soil moisture by poking your finger in – if it's dry, time for a drink. Avoid overwatering, as a puddle of water at the bottom indicates excess moisture.
