DIY Lunar New Year dragon

To celebrate the 2024 Lunar New Year, Year of the Dragon, we've put together a fun kids craft activity the kids can make at home. If you were born in 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, or 2012, then you were born in the Year of the Dragon. According to the Chinese zodiac, Dragons are magnificent leaders who are confident, generous, idealistic, and independent. They are also very ambitious and are big romantics.

The Lunar New Year is a great time to spend with the family, and since the next Year of the Dragon won’t be until 2036, why not teach the kids about this fiery creature by helping them create their own fierce dragon decorations? Simply follow our step-by-step guide and watch as their DIY Lunar New Year dragon decorations come to life!

What you’ll need:

8 sheets of red A4 paper

Scissors

Glue

Metallic gold marker pen

Gold sequins (optional)

Printable dragon head design (optional)

Method:

Step one

Place one piece of paper aside to be used for the dragon’s head. Cut one piece of paper in half horizontally to create two large rectangles. Cut both of those rectangles vertically to create four small rectangles. Repeat with six additional pieces of red paper until you have 28 small rectangles.

Step two

Fold one of your small rectangles in in half lengthways, with the open edge at the top.

Step three

Take the top two corners of the paper and fold them towards you so they meet in the centre. This should create a point at the top of the paper and leave two small sections hanging over the bottom.

Step four

Flip over your paper and fold the overhanging edges at the bottom of your paper upwards to create a boat-like shape and fold the two top corners of the bottom piece of paper to meet the bottom of your boat-shape to create a triangle.

Step five

Fold your new triangle in half from right to left, sticking the bottom left-hand corner together with glue. You will now have a right-angled triangle with two openings along the right-hand side. Repeat this process with all your pieces of red paper to create triangles.

Step six

Place two triangles aside. Slide the top of each triangle into the bottom opening of the other triangles to create the dragon’s body. Stick the remaining two triangles to the bottom of your dragon to create feet.

Step seven

Draw or trace a dragon head design onto the final piece of red paper using a gold metallic marker. Cut out the design and stick it to the right side of your dragon’s body. Decorate your dragon using the same gold marker and the gold sequins!

There you have it! You now have your very own DIY dragon decoration to watch over you and your family this Lunar New Year. All you need to do now is find the perfect place to display them.
