DIY kids potato print apron

Category: kids

This delightfully simple potato print apron has to be one of our top crafternoon ideas to date. Not only will it keep the kids busy creating some colourful DIY designs, but it’s also a sustainable way to use up those ‘funky’ potatoes at the bottom of the bag. You might even gain some extra helping hands in the kitchen – sporting their new custom-made aprons, of course.

But before you start stamping those spuds, be sure to stock up the craft box with a few essentials, all in the one easy location – your local Stockland centre.

What you’ll need:

- Canvas apron

- Potatoes

- Fabric paint

- Permanent marker

- Plus, any other fun craft materials like diamantes or sequins

How to do it:

Step one

For the adults: wash and dry the potatoes before cleanly cutting them into halves or quarters. Lay out your apron.

Tip: you can take your designs to the next level by using a carving tool to make shapes like hearts or stars in the spuds.

Step two

Dry the cut surface of the potato, get your paint ready, and dip them in your paint.

Step three

Firmly press the potato onto the apron, making sure all edges are evenly pushed in. Repeat as many times as you like.

Step four

Once you’re happy with the painted prints, allow them to dry for a few hours (or overnight) before using a permanent marker to complete the prints. We loved creating food-related designs for our DIY aprons, like little fruits and vegetables, in all shapes and colours.

Voila! Your DIY potato print apron is ready to wear.

A simple craft idea with a sustainable twist.

Here at Stockland, we’re all about simple, fun, and more importantly, sustainable, ways to busy our kid’s hands and minds. So, the chance to repurpose those odd spuds with an engaging DIY activity before they make their way into the compost bin, gets a big tick of approval from us. Your budding designers could also continue their creations by creating a range of ‘spud stamp-ware’, like linen napkins, tea towels, t-shirts – you name it! The crafternoon options are endless with this brilliant DIY activity.
