Book Week costume ideas to spark imagination

Who says Book Week is just for the kids? It's our time to shine, too. Sequins, glitter, and the chance to bring literary legends to life – we're here for it!

Yep, we're talking Book Week – mark your calendars for August 17. This year's theme is 'Reading is magic.' And what better way to get inspired than with a shopping trip to your local Stockland centre to find the perfect pre-made costume? Or if you're feeling like a craft-ernoon, try creating a DIY masterpiece (it's easier than you think!). Keep reading to discover brilliant Book Week costume ideas that are not only super easy, but the kids are bound to love them too.

Don’t underestimate accessories

Sometimes it’s the simplest costumes that are the most effective. There’s no need to overcomplicate a costume when all you need is a few accessories to bring it to life. If you’ve got a little princess, then she’ll love a unicorn-inspired costume just like the unicorn from the book ‘Unicorn and Me’ by Hollie Hughes and Morgan Huff. Simply start off with a pink outfit of your choice (tip: this can even be something they already own), then all you have to do is head to Big W for some unicorn-themed socks and Kmart for a magical unicorn headband – it really is that easy! Complete the look with some fun face gems or glitter for a final touch.

One and done

Perhaps a complete costume is more up your alley. The best part about these is that all you need to do is one shopping trip – so it’s perfect for those last-minute realisations (we’ve all been there). This year we’re loving Kmart’s hood pullovers. They are ideal for older kids who are too cool for school. For the younger ones, be sure to check out Big W's array of costume sets – they have everything from classic book characters like Dorothy and Woody to modern assembles like Paw Patrol Rocky.

Mix and match

Do you already own something to base the outfit around? If yes, then a mix-and-match costume is ideal. A great example of a mix-and-match costume is Paddington the Bear – all you need is yellow leggings or gum boots, a blue raincoat, and a red bucket hat. When worn together these make the perfect Paddington outfit. Add in a small briefcase or a toy bear and the costume is complete. Best&Less have the perfect blue raincoat and red bucket hat to complete the outfit.

Get creative

Have you got time on your side and are keen to create a costume from scratch? A DIY masterpiece is the way to go. You’ll be surprised at how diverse the craft selection is at Kmart and Big W, with both stores housing an impressive arts and craft section. A simple DIY could be rabbit ears like Peter Rabbit – all you’ll need is a headband, felt, and fabric glue. Or why not check out some other great DIY Book Week costume ideas. Where we’ll take you through the step-by-step process of making costumes for The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Paper Bag Princess, the Fox in Socks, and The BFG.

There you have it. Some easy and fun costume ideas to celebrate Book Week 2024. Remember, it's not just about dressing up; it's about celebrating the joy of reading and inspiring kids to explore the wonders of books. So, get ready to don those costumes and make this Book Week a legendary one!
