Wilam Wiinj Bridge now open at Stockland Cloverton
Wilam Wiinj Bridge, previously known as the Cloverton Boulevard Bridge, is officially open at Stockland Cloverton.
The 390-metre-long bridge, which connects Klandy Drive and Donnybrook Road, is the second entry and exit point into Cloverton.
It features two-way car access, paths for pedestrians and cyclists, and provisions for future bus connections.
Designed with two dry culverts and two wet culverts, the bridge ensures safe passage for Merri Creek fauna, including the Growling Grass Frog.
The bridge's Indigenous name, Wilam Wiinj, meaning “campfire,” references the campfires observed along the banks of the Merri Creek by explorers William Hovell and Hamilton Hume in the early 1800s.
Additionally, Stockland collaborated with the Wurundjeri people and local artists Aunty Kim Wandin and Chris Joy from Murrup Biik to create a steel sculpture of a campfire at the northern end of the bridge.
The sculpture, fabricated and installed by Jason Waterhouse from Sculpture Co, symbolizes families gathering, sharing meals, and staying warm in the cold climate.
