You’ll never be stuck for ideas on how to spend your weekends at when you live at Figtree Hill, set at the gateway to south-west Sydney’s hot spots. From surfing the waves along the coast, to indulging in retail therapy, to exploring nature, your only challenge will be deciding what to do first.

Beachside bliss

With the idyllic South Coast just 30km away, you’ll have your choice of golden beaches. Spend the day in the small coastal town of Scarborough, where you can work up an appetite with some sun, sand and surf on Thirroul Beach, before lunch at the popular Hungry Monkey Café or Scarborough Hotel. If a picnic is more your style, there are parklands close by that are perfect for families.

Kick back and relax on the quiet shore of Wombarra Beach or experience classic ocean pool swimming at Woonona. Closer to home is Simmos Beach in the Georges River Corridor, a local favourite offering barbeque and picnic areas, children’s playground and kayak ramp.

Retail, your way

South-west Sydney’s largest shopping destination, Macarthur Square, is just 7km from Figtree Hill and home to major brands like David Jones, Myer, H&M and more – not to mention a cinema and the Kellicar Lane dining precinct.

If markets are more your style, the Handmade and Homegrown Market is held every Sunday on Lithgow Street in nearby Campbelltown. Listen to live music as you stroll among the stalls with a coffee in hand from one of the local cafés.

A little further afield, the Camden Produce Markets are held every Saturday from 7am-12pm. A true farmers market, all products sold must be grown, produced or made by the person selling them. Fresh from the farm to you!

Step back in time

On the second and fourth Saturday of every month, the historic Glenalvon House in the heart of Campbelltown opens its doors to the public between 10am and 1pm. This majestic home was built in 1840 by Michael Byrne, and today showcases the agricultural heritage of the area. Devonshire Tea is available every second month and you can take a free, self-guided tour of Glenalvon every third Sunday.

Camden Park House is among the most important historic houses in Australia and was designed as the centrepiece of the property Camden Park, established in 1805. The house was built in 1835 and is recognised for its fine architecture, its connection to the Macarthur family and to the many and varied contributions made by this family to the development of agriculture in Australia.

Discover natural beauty

Explore more than 400ha of natural woodland, gardens, lakes and open spaces at the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan. You can easily spend a day here, enjoying the many themed gardens, spotting wildlife including wallaroos, frogs and lizards, and birdwatching on Lake Nadungamba. A playground will keep the kids busy, and The Gardens Café is open daily for breakfast, lunch and snacks. There are also plenty of barbeque and picnic facilities to make use of.

Work up a sweat hiking or biking along more than 20km of walking paths and trails. There’s even a dedicated trail for mountain biking! Or, you can spend a leisurely hour marvelling at the interactive sculptures, such as the Sundial of Human Involvement and the Federation Flower Maze. And best of all, entry to the gardens is free!

Take a short walk along the walking track to Maddens Falls and spot the resident honeyeaters, red wattlebirds and golden whistlers. Stop by Stokes Creek for a swim and picnic lunch or ride your mountain bike along one of the park’s trails. Visit during spring to see the wildflowers blooming or in April when the falls are at their fullest. Take a virtual tour!

For a unique experience, visit the Japanese Gardens in Campbelltown Arts Centre. A gift from Koshigaya, Campbelltown's sister city in Japan, the gardens are designed to provide quiet solitude and feature a traditional waterfall, koi pond, timber bridge, stonework pathways, lush plantings and a 16th-century-designed teahouse.
