Flying high with Sports Hub opening

Halcyon Promenade residents Peter and Anne Tubman truly understand the value of great neighbours. Their journey together began on a Good Friday in 1995 when they first met while living next door to each other in Cairns. Fast forward nearly 30 years, and in a delightful twist of fate, the couple moved into their new home in Promenade on Good Friday this year.

“We were pleasantly surprised by how things turned out,” Anne shares.

“We had lived in two other community villages before, but when we visited Halcyon Promenade, we instantly fell in love with what we saw.”

Peter, a retired QantasLink Pilot, jumps in, “We’re not getting any younger, and we knew we wanted to own our own home in a secure estate close to the big city and be part of a social community.”

Without the worries of maintaining a large house and garden, the Tubman’s love their low maintenance, lock-up-and-go home in Halcyon Promenade, as well as the positive impact the move has had on their social life.

“Since moving in, everyone has made us feel so welcome. It’s comforting to know that no matter what happens, we’ll have the support of this community,” Peter says.

“Friendship is such an important part of looking after your health, and we’ve made a real effort to get involved and make new friends. And there’s so much to do that you’re never stuck indoors,” Anne adds.

Peter agrees, “Retirement is great — it feels like one big holiday! Every Monday, we ask ourselves, ‘What should we do today?’ With so much to choose from, we can just say, ‘Let’s have a coffee and think about it.’”

The recent opening of the Halcyon Promenade Sports Hub — which includes table tennis, billiards, a dance floor and a messy art studio — opens up even more possibilities for the social duo.

“I’ve already put my hand up to work as a bar manager and completed my RSA course,” Peter shares.

Anne laughs, “He really does know how to pour a great wine!”

“Have you heard there’s a 3D golf simulator? I wouldn’t mind having a crack. And there are three pickleball courts too! If the knees, back and other bits hold up, I’m definitely going to try that,” Peter says.

“My American son-in-law is a massive fan of the sport, and he’s got my daughter into it. We’ll have to play when they come to visit,” Anne adds.

When they’re not working up a sweat at the new Sports Hub, there’s no shortage of neighbourly street parties to attend.

According to Peter, Anne’s quite the social butterfly.

“While I do love sitting on our patio with a glass of wine, there’s always a get together happening in the neighbourhood and an opportunity to catch up with friends,” Anne says.

“That's what this place is all about — it doesn’t matter where you come from or what your background is, you’ll always find someone like-minded for a chat.”
