Shining a light on change
As proud members of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, we are deeply committed to fostering safe, respectful, and equitable environments for our employees and the communities we serve.
Why this matters
Violence against women and girls is a global crisis, with alarming statistics underscoring the urgent need for action:
- 736 million women globally—almost 1 in 3—have experienced physical or sexual violence at least once in their lifetime^ (UN Women Australia)
- In Australia, nearly 2 in 5 women have faced sexual harassment in the workplace in the past five years*
- On average, one woman is killed every nine days by a current or former partner~).
These figures are a stark reminder of the responsibility we all share in raising awareness and driving change, and why this year’s 16 Days of Activism theme, “Safe. Everywhere. Always,” is so critical.
The role of property in cultural transformation
We believe our role in the property industry extends beyond managing buildings - it includes shaping the communities and workplaces we inhabit. The Property Champions of Change group is committed to tackling systemic issues like gender-based violence through visible leadership and meaningful action.
Collectively we are looking to inspire action:
- Advancing gender equality: tackling gender-based violence is a crucial step in addressing the root causes of inequality.
- Shifting societal norms: public commitments and initiatives help challenge harmful stereotypes and foster a culture of respect.
- Workforce well-being: safe, supportive workplaces empower employees to thrive, enhancing productivity and engagement.
- Broader societal impact: the property industry has a unique platform to inspire change across communities and beyond.
Lighting the path to a brighter future
On 10 December, Stockland Piccadilly and other assets across Australia will light up in orange as a symbol of hope and solidarity with survivors of gender-based violence.
We hope to send a powerful message: united in our commitment to ending gender-based violence. This visual display aligns with the theme of the UN Women Australia campaign, “Safe. Everywhere. Always,” symbolising a brighter future free from violence.
Stockland’s role in driving change
We are actively taking steps to address gender-based violence and promote equality:
- Partnering with Our Watch: (a national leader in the primary prevention of violence against women and their children in Australia); we’re implementing evidence-based strategies to foster safe and respectful workplaces
- Training first responders: we are equipping key team members with the skills to provide support to those experiencing domestic and family violence (DFV).
- Updated DFV policy and procedure: in collaboration with experts, we’ve enhanced our policies to ensure informed and compassionate support for those in need including financial assistance, flexible arrangements and IT measures and access to leave, first responders, counselling and support services.
As we take part in the 16 Days of Activism, Stockland invites tenants, employees, and communities to reflect, engage, and take action. Together, we can shine a light on change and help create a world where everyone feels safe, respected, and valued.
