Sleepover backyard games

Category: kids

With the Olympics kicking off on Friday 26th July, what better way to celebrate the lead-up than hosting your very own Olympic-inspired sleepover? Gather your friends and prepare for an epic night of non-stop excitement as you dive into a series of backyard challenges.

From mastering Bullseye Bucket to racing through Cross Country Skiing, and testing your aim with Sand Bag Toss, there's no shortage of thrilling activities to keep the fun going all night long. Not only is it a fun way to keep the kids entertained, but it's also an opportunity to educate and demonstrate the values of sportsmanship, teamwork, and healthy competition. Keep reading to find out three games you can recreate at home. Let the games begin!

Bullseye Bucket

Products: Kmart 84 Buckets $1.00, Kmart 6 Pack Tennis Balls $5.00, Kmart Coloured Plated $1.50.

Using simple household items like buckets and balls, you can create your very own game of Bullseye Bucket! This game requires each player to take four turns, standing at a designated spot and aiming to toss the ball into the buckets. But here's the challenge: each bucket has a different point value, ranging from 5 to 20 points. To win, players must strategically aim for the buckets with higher point values to reach the highest score possible of 60. This game not only tests accuracy and coordination but also encourages mathematical thinking as players add up their scores. So gather your friends and family, and let the Bullseye Bucket competition begin!

Cross Country Skiing

Products: Big W 8 World Map $12, Woolworths Oreos $1.40, Woolworths Toothpicks $3.50.

You’ve heard of Cross-Country Skiing, but have you heard of it without the snow? In this game, you will need to cover a table in maps or a map tablecloth. On one side of the table, place a packet of Oreos and have the first player stand at the end of the table. The aim? Slide the Oreos across the map, aiming to land them in each continent. But here's the twist: the Oreos must come to a stop inside the continent to score, and any that land on the line must be "skied" again. The first player to successfully get one Oreo in each of the continents wins! If you’re playing with multiple teams at once, use Oreos with different fillings. Not only will this game keep the kids entertained, but it offers a playful approach to learning geography.

Sand Bag Toss

Products: Big W 8 Pool Noodles $2, Target 25 Pack Bamboo Stakes $42.99, Kmart 4 Pack Bean Bags $6.00, Big W Masking Tape $9.75.

For this game, you’ll need to create your own goal system using pool noodles and masking tape. Once assembled, you’re now ready to play Sand Bag Toss! Using sand bags, each player will need to stand at a designated spot and throw the sand bag into the holes. The first player to reach all five holes is the winner! If that’s not hard enough, you can always take it up a notch by assigning each coloured ring a point value, with the innermost ring being worth the highest points and the outer rings worth less. This will not only foster friendly competition but will also encourage the use of their mathematical skills in a fun and engaging way.

In the spirit of the upcoming Olympics, hosting your own games-themed sleepover at home is the perfect way to infuse some excitement into your household! These games offer more than just entertainment—they provide a valuable opportunity to instil important values like sportsmanship, teamwork, and healthy competition in your children. Whether you're aiming for the Bullseye Bucket, navigating through Cross-Country Skiing, or aiming for victory in Sand Bag Toss, these activities promise fun, learning, and unforgettable memories for all involved.
