A place of possibilities
From late 2024*, an architecturally designed pedestrian bridge will be constructed across Lake Kawana as part of Stockland’s ongoing infrastructure delivery investment within Birtinya and across the Sunshine Coast.
The new 130-metre bridge, valued at $27 million and funded by Stockland, will create a new over-water walking and riding experience for pedestrians and enhance the popular active transport route around Lake Kawana. The pedestrian bridge will provide a new east-west pedestrian link from Venue 114 at Sportsmans Parade to the future Birtinya town centre beside Kawana Way – which is currently being re-visioned – and other walkable waterfront.
The bridge is set to become a key feature and access point for the broader sports and recreational precinct, which will feature 2032 Olympic and Paralympic venues.
Construction of the new bridge is scheduled to commence later in 2024* and is expected to be opened to the public in 2026*.

Yes, most of the walkway will not be impacted and remain open. A temporary diversion away from the work areas will be in place during construction. This will be clearly signed. The existing walkway will ‘tie in’ to link to the bridge and re-opened for public access when the works are completed.
The new pedestrian bridge across Lake Kawana will be 130-metres in length and will ‘tie-in' to walkways on either side to allow continuous pedestrian and public movement.
No, the new bridge will be for pedestrian and active travel use only. The bridge will be suitable for mobility devices.
Most of the lake will be accessible and open to recreational users during the delivery of the bridge. For safety reasons, the public will be separated from work areas, limiting north-south movement through this area. This section of the lake will be re-opened when the bridge is constructed. We understand this may create inconvenience for some users of Lake Kawana, and we appreciate your understanding.
The bridge is designed to provide clearance of up to 3-metres at its centre to ensure the lake can be safely used by water-based leisure craft.

Infrastructure and services for a growing community
The Birtinya locality is also one of the largest infrastructure projects ever undertaken on the Sunshine Coast.
With an ongoing program of transport and community infrastructure, with a total expected Stockland investment of over $350 million including Lake Kawana, extensive network of walking trails, parks and open spaces, roads and bridges. This infrastructure investment is key to supporting the thriving residential communities and also enables extensive investment in non-residential facilities, including Sunshine Coast University Hospital and Sunshine Coast Private Hospital, retail, child care, aged care, offices, hotel and other services.

Future Birtinya Town Centre
The Birtinya master plan will be completed with the delivery of the Birtinya Town Centre, located on vacant land adjacent to Kawana Way.
Stockland has initiated exciting work to reimagine the Town Centre master plan, seeking to introduce current best practice/place-led urban design principles. These include increased provision of public open space, improvements in embedded sustainability elements, a potential new waterfront dining opportunity, diversity of residential and commercial offer to support a thriving town centre, and support future public transport investment.
The proposed changes are subject to an ongoing planning and approvals process. Stockland will provide updates about the future Birtinya town centre when more details are available.
