Construction commences on landmark cable-stay bridge over Lake Kawana
Onsite work has started on the highly anticipated 130-metre cable-stay pedestrian bridge, located adjacent to Venue 114 on Sportsmans Parade, Birtinya. This landmark project will enhance the active transport network, creating an essential east-west link for pedestrians and cyclists across Lake Kawana.
Initial civil works are now underway, following an initial offsite fabrication period, with site preparation, establishment of construction access, and assembly areas progressing in preparation for bridge assembly. During the works, public access to the lake and surrounding walkways will mostly remain open, with safety measures in place such as exclusion zones and clearly marked pedestrian detours around the work areas.
In the coming months, the community will notice increased activity as cranes and foundation equipment arrive on-site on the west bank. The east bank compound will be established soon, with access from Sportsmans Parade, and redirection measures for pedestrians and cyclists will be in place to ensure public safety.
To minimise disruption, key structural elements are being pre-built off-site by the project’s contractor, a joint venture between Georgiou Group and Brady Marine and Civil, known for their expertise in complex bridge construction.
Stockland aims to ensure minimal disruption to the surrounding neighbourhood by keeping noise levels low and conducting works strictly between 6:00am and 6:00pm, Monday to Saturday. No works are expected on public holidays and the local community will be advised if night works are required.
Once complete, the bridge will feature a four-metre-wide shared path, accommodating pedestrians, cyclists, and mobility devices. Designed with a gentle slope and up to three metres of clearance at the centre, the bridge will also allow for leisure craft such as kayaks to pass underneath.
The $27 million bridge, currently anticipated for completion in early-mid 2026^, is expected to boost active transport and improve connectivity for the local community. It will join another 70-metre pedestrian bridge already under construction, and future walkable waterfront extension to complete a full loop around Lake Kawana.
This bridge forms part of the larger Birtinya precinct, one of the most extensive infrastructure projects ever undertaken on the Sunshine Coast. Stockland is delivering more than $350 million in key transport and community infrastructure in the area, including roads, bridges, parks and services.
