Free computer hub helps to change lives at Willowdale

12 June 2019

A new initiative offering the free use of reconditioned computers for everything from school work to help in bolstering internet skills has struck a chord at Stockland’s Willowdale community in Denham Court.

The computers are part of a special hub at Willowdale Community Place, which is managed by not-for-profit community organisation Big Yellow Umbrella.

Richard Rhydderch, NSW General Manager of Residential Communities at Stockland, said the suite of free computers was a valuable addition to programs being offered at Willowdale Community Place, which had become a very popular community space.

“Willowdale Community Place is designed as an 8-star house under the Nationwide House Energy Scheme and is a showcase of best-practice sustainable living in addition to being place a venue for community events, activities, classes and workshops,’’ Mr Rhydderch said.

“It is a wonderful asset for the residents of Willowdale and a place where residents can meet and connect through community initiatives such as the new computer hub.’’

Edward Feuerstein, General Manager of big Yellow Umbrella, said the computers were being used by a wide range of people including job hunters and those improving their literacy and computer skills, as well residents wanting to connect with other people in the community.

“We can set people up online with the computers at the centre and support them with their computer skills in a space where they can build friendships as well as their self-esteem, improve their employment opportunities and bring their children for free,” Mr Feuerstein said.

“It has proven very popular with people throughout the region, with support from trained staff four days a week.

“The hub complements other programs on offer at the centre including a Mums and Bubs Playgroup, music lessons, dance classes, a walking group, bootcamp and a fortnightly book club.’’

Launched in 2013, Willowdale is already home to more than 1,500 families and features include innovative townhomes, completed homes, retirement living, a community centre, shopping centre, sports facilities and a proposed new primary school.

The community is ideally located 15 kilometres from Liverpool, is close to major road links such as the M5 and M7 motorways, allows easy access to Parramatta and Sydney Airport, and is a short, five-minute drive to the new Leppington Train Station.

Located in a major growth corridor and within proximity to major transport links, home and land packages at Willowdale start from $561,500.

The computer hub is open on Monday from 12pm to 2pm, Wednesday 1.45pm to 2.45pm, Thursday 12pm to 2.30pm, and Friday 10am to 12pm. To find out more, phone (02) 9606 2229.
