Let’s get active with kids sports these school holidays

As the world gears up for the Olympics and school holidays are finally upon us, it's the perfect time to encourage kids to swap screen time for the fresh winter air and some good ol' physical activity. After all, what could be more motivating than the excitement of the Olympics?

Engaging in sports offers an array of benefits for kids. It helps them develop teamwork and communication skills, enhances their physical fitness and coordination, boosts their confidence and self-esteem, and provides opportunities to make new friends. Most importantly, sports are fun! We understand that getting started can be a challenge, so we've compiled some great ideas to get your kids moving these school holidays.

Host your own mini-Olympics

Why not bring the spirit of the Olympics to your backyard? Transform your outdoor space into a mini-Olympic stadium. Set up an obstacle race with cones, ropes, and hula hoops from Kmart, play balloon volleyball with balloons from The Reject Shop, or set up a makeshift balance beam using supplies from Bunnings Warehouse for backyard gymnastics. The possibilities are endless, and it's a wonderful way to get the kids laughing, competing, and engaged in physical fitness. You can even have a medal ceremony at the end with handmade medals made using craft supplies from Woolworths for added excitement.

Enrol in school holiday sport programs

Many schools and sports clubs offer holiday programs and clinics that allow kids to explore various sports and activities. These programs provide a supportive environment for children to stay active, try new things, and make new friends. From soccer and tennis to dance and martial arts, there's something for every interest. These programs are often run by experienced coaches who ensure the activities are safe and enjoyable, making it a great way to keep your kids busy and healthy during the break. Be sure to stock up on all the essentials like good quality athletic shoes and clothing from The Athlete’s Foot, Sportfirst, and Surf Dive ‘n Ski.

Embrace indoor sports

If the winter weather is too chilly for outdoor activities, don't worry! There are plenty of ways to keep your kids active indoors. Try indoor soccer with a soft ball from Sportfirst, mini basketball with a hoop attached to a door from Kmart, or table tennis on the dining room table. You can also set up an indoor obstacle course using pillows, chairs, and blankets, have a family yoga session to stretch and relax, or try indoor bowling with empty plastic bottles and a soft ball. These activities not only keep kids moving but also encourage creativity and problem-solving as they navigate the indoor setups.

The key to getting kids active is to make it fun! Encourage them to try new things, praise their efforts, and join in on the action yourself. So, in our efforts to make sports even more fun we’re giving away a sports gift pack valued at over $800!
