Book Week Costume Ideas 2022

Category: kids

From the moment you start a family, you’re surrounded by messages about the importance of reading – and for good reason! The benefits of reading at every stage of a child’s development are never-ending. When you read with your kids, they take it all in: the vocabulary, language structure, colours, shapes, manners, and all kinds of critical information about how the world around them works. Not to mention, it sparks their imagination.

To celebrate and encourage reading, the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) are back with their annual Book Week event to help you and your little one build a positive association with books. Running from August 20-26, this year’s theme is all about dreaming with eyes open.

No matter if you’re spending this year’s Book Week at home, at school, or your kids are simply looking for a chance to celebrate their favourite characters, we’ve put together a selection of trending books that will have them captivated by wonder and inspire them to get creative with their costumes! Plus, you’ll find everything you need for DIY Book Week at your local Stockland centre.

There isn’t a kid out there who doesn’t love foraying into another world to experience an adventure like no other. And fantasy books help bring their imagination to life by allowing the impossible to occur. The much-loved children’s best-seller, Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, tells the story of a boy named Max, who imagines sailing far away to a land of Wild Things. It’s an oldie, but a goodie!

Shortlisted for the CBCA’s ‘Picture Book of the Year’ is Ellie’s Dragon by Bob Graham, a moving story about the wanders of imagination and the nature of growing up. But if your child’s imagination is far greater than you thought, Go Away, Worry Monster! By Robin Tatlow-Lord tells the story of a boy named Archie, who is feels anxious about starting at a new school, until he realised that the only way to feel better is to make the ‘worry monster’ go away.

And finally, a timeless classic from the Dreamtime, The Rainbow Serpent by Dick Roughsey. Telling the story of how the Rainbow Serpent came from beneath the ground and created huge ridges, mountains, and gorges, this beautiful story is a great way to introduce your kids to the innumerable names and stories of Indigenous Australian traditions.
